Due to the extreme amount of rainfall from this weekend’s severe thunderstorm, and the
predicted rainfall later this week, the Monroe Public Works Department will be opening
sandbagging operations at 1 pm Tuesday, April 16, at four different locations (listed below).
NOTE: Saturday, April 13, at 3:47am the National Weather Service in Shreveport, along with
Ouachita Parish Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, issued weather forecasts
predicting 2-3 inches of rain for our area. However, on Saturday, April 13, a much stronger
storm came through our region. The City of Monroe received more than 6 inches of rain this
weekend. Because of this, most of our drainage structures are at or near capacity. Another 1-3
inches of rain that is predicted for Wednesday and Thursday of this week may cause some
severe flash flooding AND back water flooding.
City of Monroe Sandbagging Locations:
- Saul Adler Recreation Center – 3900 Westminster Avenue
- Marbles Recreation Center – 2950 Renwick St
- Emily P. Robinson Recreation Center – 3504 Jackson Street
- Benoit Recreation Center – 1700 Oaklawn Dr, Monroe, LA
Note: The Public Works Department will provide shovels, sand, and bags for residents to
fill their own bags. Residents will be allowed to fill 25 bags.
